Cowboys and the 'Wild West' have spawned one of the most memorable, if largely mythic, images of the period, very much aided and abetted by Hollywood and the invention of the 'Singing Cowboy'.The film industry helped make stars out of Tex Ritter, Jimmy Wakely and Rex Allen, although all their careers started on the radio.Named as such in 1934, The Sons Of The Pioneers originally included Leonard Slye, better known as Roy Rogers. Appearing in many films, the group survived the replacement of Rogers in 1937 when he became a solo star and went on to great success on record. The Cass County Boys were a trio who often backed Gene Autry in films and on stage; although they endured into the 1950s, they did not find success on record.
