A young Scots trumpeter in the RAF would come to London while on leave from his National Service chores. One night, he plucked up courage and asked Johnny Dankworth if he could jam with the boys at the Club Eleven. Johnny reluctantly said yes to the unknown . But the jazz blown by Jimmy Deuchar that night came literally as a revelation to everyone with ears to hear. The result ? Jimmy joined the Dankworth Seven at the age of 19, as soon as he was out of uniform in 1950. Jimmy left two years later and after short spells with Paul Adam and the rhumba band at the Coconut Grove night-spot, he joined Geraldo. From Gerry, he went into the newly formed Jack Parnell band where he stayed until he joined the band which was to become a landmark in British modern jazz, the nine-piece Ronnie Scott Orchestra which debuted in February 1953. By this time, not only was Jimmy already recognised as one of Britain's leading modern jazz trumpet stylists, but he was also proving to be a most original composer and arranger.
