Given the fact that little more than twenty
years separated the First and Second World Wars, and that Irving Berlin lived a
full 44 years after the end of the latter, maybe during the worst depths of the
Cold War (during the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, perhaps) he may fully have
expected to write a third wartime musical to complement his previous two, "Yip!
Yip! Yaphank" and "This Is The Army". Of course, a Third World War musical might
well have been rather short in duration and called something like "Is The End?"
or "Four Minutes To Glory", but fortunately for Mr. Berlin his unusually long
life (he was 101 when he died in 1989) was not troubled by further global
conflict.
