This compilation ably reveals the talents of Les Paul at the peak of his ‘Pop’ chart successes in the 1950s. The Country roots remain much in evidence, not least because Mary Ford was also from that background: her real name was Iris Colleen Summers and she was introduced to Les by Gene Autry in 1945 when Les was looking for a singer to add some ‘hillbilly’ music to his then Jazz-orientated Trio; in 1949, they were to marry. Amongst the big hits featured here, none is bigger than "Vaya Con Dios" from 1953, a song Les first heard sung by Anita O’Day and which, once he and Mary had recorded it, he had to fight with his record label to promote. Whose instincts were right ?
