Eddie Davis gained his nickname 'Lockjaw' from the title of one of his earliest recordings, although it could have been applied equally to the intense, immobile embouchure that clamped around his tenor saxophone mouthpiece whenever he blew. Lockjaw's sound, or rather sounds, were the product of the twin influences of Rhythm & Blues and an apprenticeship in the Swing bands of Cootie Williams (alongside Charlie Parker), Andy Kirk and others in the mid-Forties.
