"The scene on our arrival at the Duprees [Pacific Street, Brooklyn] was worthy of a Chaplin movie: abject housing, poor and outwardly dirty, badly paved sidewalks; an exterior staircase of worm eaten wood led up to their apartment. Yet in extreme contrast to this, we were soon to learn that everything in America is contrast - the street was lined with magnificent cars. In this strange and disturbing setting we began our stay in New York, greeted by rats scratching behind walls and roaches running around the floor," wrote bemused French blues researchers Jacques Demêtre and Marcel Chauvard of their initial impressions of their stay with Jack and Lucille Dupree in September 1959.
