Irving Berlin’s songbook remains one of the cornerstones of American popular music — witty, melodic, emotionally direct and endlessly adaptable. You’re Just In Love brings together two dozen performances from some of the finest singers of the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, each offering a distinctive reading of Berlin’s timeless work.
The programme opens with Lew Conrad’s crisp Puttin’ On the Ritz, followed by Ginger Rogers’ bright, rhythmic Let Yourself Go. Clinton Webb contributes a smooth Not for All the Rice in China, while Jack Leonard lends warmth to Marie. Billie Lockwood’s Me and Fred Astaire’s elegant The Piccolino add further variety.
Joan Edwards and Clark Dennis deliver a charming Easter Parade, and Helen O’Connell brings her trademark poise to I Threw a Kiss in the Ocean. Duets and ensemble moments add colour throughout: Dinah Shore and Dick Todd on Outside of That I Love You, Kenny Baker on I Left My Heart at the Stage Door Canteen, and Tony Martin with Fran Warren on Remember.
The set moves through a series of standout performances: Deanna Durbin’s tender Always, Vaughn Monroe’s Just a Blue Serge Suit, Ethel Merman’s brassy Doin’ What Comes Naturally, John Raitt’s swaggering I’m a Bad, Bad Man, and Fran Warren’s Homework. Johnnie Johnson’s Steppin’ Out With My Baby and Galina Talva’s The Ocarina add rhythmic lift, while Eddie Fisher offers a heartfelt How Deep Is the Ocean.
The closing stretch includes Connie Boswell’s The Little Things in Life, Dennis Day’s Say It Isn’t So, Jane Powell’s polished Let’s Face the Music, and the title duet You’re Just In Love from Russell Nype and Dinah Shore — a joyful finale to a wide‑ranging tribute.
