• ‘SAN ANTONIO ROSE’ was originally a fiddle tune, written by Bob Wills in 1938, to which he added lyrics two years later, sung by Tommy Duncan; both versions were million-selling, crossover Hillbilly/Pop hits.
• By the mid-40s it was becoming a standard, with further Pop hits from Bing Crosby, The Dinning Sisters, Jo Stafford and Patti Page, and later by The Four Lovers, The Ames Brothers, Pat Boone, Teresa Brewer and Clint Eastwood.
• Similarly, C&W singers like Carl Smith, Dick Curless, Patsy Cline, George Jones and Ray Price recorded hugely popular covers.
• Instrumentally, Grady Martin, Joe “Fingers” Carr, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Floyd Cramer and Pete Fountain cut excellent 1950s versions, while in the early 60s, The Frantics, The Jumping Jewels, The Spotnicks, Tommy Allsup & The Raiders, The 50 Guitars Of Tommy Garrett, Johnny & The Hurricanes and Tex Williams cut great twangy guitar-oriented arrangements.
