Outside it was snowing; temperatures were minus. Thirteen musicians, hunched against the icy blast, edged uneasily into the studio. Twelve of them shivered; Johnny Hawksworth grinned. Basses like cold weather. He tuned up. Dill Jones sidled into the piano stool. Someone hawked round some scores. Allan Ganley swung in on brushes. Jimmy Deuchar ran through a phrase with Don Rendell, and the session was under way. That's how it went all day. Nothing formal; just fun. Those who were sitting it out wanted to get in and blow.
