Tubby HAYES – The Eighth Wonder

This CD takes it name from an old Tempo Ep of Tubby's, on which he plays all the instruments except bass and drums. All the numbers from that disc-an interesting diversion, and a testament to the man's versalatility- are present and correct, but the majority of the tracks come from Tubby's Groove, his last album for Decca's jazz offshoot Tempo and his first since the break-up of the Jazz Couriers. Indeed, the line-up is that of the final incarnation of the Couriers minus Ronnie Scott. This CD is as good an example of British hard bop circa 1959 as you'll find.
